After the snow the rain

Nas vom Regen überschwemmt

Yes, that is Nas beach (Photo: Stamatis Melis) or rather, what is left of it. It must have looked something like this in ancient times when the pilgrim ships docked at the clearly visible harbor pier below the temple.

We had an unusually dry summer in 2016, bad for the olives and bad for nature in general. That’s why we’re happy for every drop of rain. Only here in the East Aegean are the weather conditions recently tending towards extremes…

Suddenly it rains so hard and so much that the dry earth can no longer absorb the rain. It simply bounces off and flows towards the sea, taking with it everything that isn’t nailed down. Raging rivers and floods quickly form. The heavy rain is usually associated with a storm. Trees are simply snapped like straws and swept away by the masses of water. The roads are then just as impassable as when there is snow.

Don’t worry, by spring the sea will have washed back all the sand. Weather-wise, we’ve had a few bad days with lots of snow behind us. After the snow came the rain and with the rain came the melting snow… Now it’s stormy and freezing cold, but everything is back to normal.
