Travel via Athens

Flight to Greece: My favorite flight search engine is Momondo. With one click you can see which flight is the cheapest, the fastest or the best combination of both on which day. Direct destinations would be Athens, Thessaloniki, Samos or Mykonos to easily travel further to Ikaria.

Hotels near Athens Airport: If you arrive late or have to leave very early, you can find the best hotels around Athens Airport here

Stopover in Athens: Athens is a fascinating mega-metropolis, lively, exciting and full of culture. A short trip is always worth it! Read my tips for a successful stay in Athens, which is the best Hotel in Athens for you, how to find your way around Athens airport (check luggage, etc.) and the easiest way to get from the airport to the city or to Piraeus.

Domestic flight to Ikaria: By plane you can fly directly to Ikaria from Athens or Thessaloniki. There are two airlines that fly to Ikaria. Aegeanair (formerly Olympicair) and Skyexpress. PS: The old rule still applies to cheap flights: the earlier you book, the cheaper the flight. It’s always worth consulting the “Low Fare Calender” from Aegean/Olympic. If your flight leaves early in the morning, it is worth staying overnight near the airport, because the distances in Ikaria are long and the roads are winding. You can ask your hotel to organize a transfer from/to the airport for you. This is how to have stress-free travel! Unfortunately there is no public transport. Taxi or rental car are unavoidable.

Rental car: is ready when you arrive in Ikaria: you can order a rental car easily and cheaply through me and receive it upon your arrival. The minimum rental period is 4 days. (An agreement between the car rental companies and the taxi drivers to avoid visitors only renting a car for the journey to/from the airport and thus depriving the taxi drivers of their livelihood. The car is provided at the airport at no extra charge and you can use it when you leave After consultation, leave it there or somewhere (e.g. hotel, ferry port, etc.).

Travel by ferry

This is the more comfortable version. You have different options: with the regular Ferry from Athens, Mykonos or Samos to Ikaria or with the speedboat Island hopping across the smaller neighboring islands.

Ship ports in Ikaria – Agios Kyrikos or Evdilos

There are two ports in Ikaria.

Agios Kyrikos is the main town on the south side near the airport. There is also a sailboat navy in Agios Kyrikos.

Evdilos is the port on the north side of the island. Please consult the ship schedule to find out whether the ferry lands in Agios Kyrikos or Evdylos on your desired travel date.

Sometimes it is recommended to take a room for one night near the port in order to get to/from the ship more stress-free and quickly.
