App for smartphones and tablets
For experienced and die-hard hikers who like to go out on their own and are familiar with navigating GPS and terrain maps, there is a pretty cool app from Viewranger. First download the free app, then the premium Ikaria map. Upgrading with the Premium Ikaria Card is subject to a fee.
Still, I definitely wouldn’t want to miss the paper map
I tried both. I have often gotten lost in the mountains on my hunt for fresh wild mushrooms. You can’t afford to make any mistakes, especially in fog. Accidents often occur due to careless tourists.
I think the app is good for on the go, but on the small display, oh well! And with the tablet under my arm, I don’t want to wander through wild river valleys – it’s easy to lose track. I definitely wouldn’t want to miss the paper map. It is more handy and simply clearer and should always be with you on all trips, even with a rental car!
Being mobile is everything!
Ikaria is very spacious and there is no public transport. Even if you have the wanderlust and the joy of bouldering, not everything can be done on foot and you will miss the most beautiful Blue Zones hikes or excursion destinations such as the Onufrios monastery or the beach at Seichelles. So I definitely recommend a rental car at least temporarily. Ikaria’s nature is simply indescribable! To discover the most beautiful places in the Icarian wilderness, you have to set out.
