This November I was again able to give a slide presentation entitled “Ikaria – Living and Dancing on a Greek Island” at the Hellasfreunde cultural association in Bern. I talked about our everyday life on the island, the olive harvest and of course about the famous dance festivals in Ikaria. My concerns were three:
Make Ikaria a little better known! Make Ikaria easier to reach! Support Ikaria directly!
I tried to arouse curiosity about an unknown island with beautiful pictures. Since there is no good information on the internet, I showed you the easiest way to reach Ikaria. Because I am convinced that every euro that travelers spend in a tavern or guesthouse directly benefits the family in question! You don’t read much about the crisis anymore, but it is still present everywhere.
Of course, I also presented my current fundraising project “Heating oil for schools”. The evening’s collection was ultimately intended to benefit the children of Raches.
The 70 or so visitors seemed very satisfied because at the end of the evening they had collected almost 800 francs. The association also increased the amount to a total of 1,200 francs. I would like to thank the association and of course all the individual donors from the bottom of my heart! Thanks to the generous donation, the children on Ikaria will be able to be taught in heated classrooms this coming winter.
If you also feel solidarity with Ikaria
And of course dancing was also a topic again! Because dancing is simply part of everyday life for the locals on Ikaria. And since I’m passionate about teaching Greek dance, and I’ve been there before…
At the end, some people dared to try out a Greek dance with me. That was really fun!
