Dear Ikaria friends
It all started exactly a year ago with Oskar’s spontaneous private initiative for the plight of the graduating class of the Raches Lyceum and then last summer with a generous donation from Bremen, which Kirsten quickly made available for our project to support the schools in Raches.
In September we founded “Ikaria Friends”
and made our idea public here on the Ikaria platform.
Oskar and Kirsten:
,,It cannot be the case that in a European country schoolchildren and teachers have to attend classes in coats and thick jackets in winter!
If the Greek state is no longer able to organize this, then as an active global citizen you have to do something! That was actually our motivation. We probably don’t need to describe here how well we are doing in Switzerland and Germany!
Is it possible to bring a sense of solidarity into the world in today’s materialistic times??!“ – And whether it is possible!
On the occasion of the first donation handover to the upper school in Raches, the dance group spontaneously collected another 620 euros at the October seminar in Ikaria. Back home, we opened a corresponding donation account in Switzerland and Germany.
What happened next was almost a miracle for all of us!
To date, an additional €4,500 has been raised from countless donors from Switzerland, Germany, Greece and Holland. This is the best Christmas present for the schools in Raches!
The “Heating oil for school” campaign affects around 300 children in Raches.
And the action continues!
I contacted all schools, the upper level, the lower levels (Raches, Kastanies, Polykarpos, Karkynagri) and the kindergartens. Because we had an unusually warm October, November and early December, the heaters were only turned on for 3 hours a day, if at all. So not much heating oil has been used up yet. However, after the holidays come the worst months: January, February, March. Then the money will be needed. I promised the school administrators that we would take care of it.

At this point we would like to personally thank all donors from the bottom of our hearts for your help and commitment! Every donation, big or small, is, as they say in Greek: ένα λιθαράκι στην επιτυχία (ena litharaki stin epitichia- loosely translated: brings us one step further to success!)
