Review of the lecture on November 12, 2014 about Ikaria including the donation result

On Wednesday, November 12th, 2014, Ursula Kastanias gave a lecture at the Friends of Hellas entitled: “Ikaria – Living and Dancing on a Greek Island”.

Ursula Kastanias has lived on Ikaria for 30 years. Her family produces olive oil and runs a small shop. Ursula is also a trained dance teacher. She runs the website www.ikaria.ch and supports the schools in Ikaria through fundraising campaigns.

In her lecture, Ursula explained to us in an exciting and entertaining way: about the special rhythm of life on this island, about the century of invisibility, about the pirates, the connection to Asia Minor and the exiled communists…

In the second part she went into more detail about her passion for dancing. She gave us an insight into the vibrant dance tradition of Ikaria and the importance of the famous panigyria/dance festivals. At the end there was a mini dance course – and large numbers of people took part enthusiastically.

This time we donated the collection to Ursula’s charity to support the schools on Ikaria. The 90 visitors were obviously happy with the presentation; at the end we found 1,140 francs + 70 euros in our piggy bank. As a club, we increased the amount by an additional 500 francs to a total of 1,640 francs + 70 euros.

Now we can hope that the children on Ikaria can be taught in heated classrooms in the coming winter.
