Honey for breakfast, anti-aging salads and lots of local red wine. Jan Moir met the islanders who are over 100 years old and who told him how they enjoy their long lives.

The island of Ikaria lies on the easternmost edge of Greece. Here, where the mountains seem to plunge into the sea, where the medicinal and aromatic herbs grow wild and the hills are dotted with brightly painted beehives and spotty goats, life is so good – and so healthy – that centenarians are the order of the day.

Here, where the salty wind blows and the local wine flows, people live longer and better than anywhere else on the planet. People like Grigoris Tsahas, who just celebrated his 99th birthday, are almost in a minority for “Ikarian standards”.

An article by Steve Nolan published in Dailymail on January 7, 2013

Everyone seems to have their own theory about the key to a long and healthy life.

With an aging population and continued advances in medicine, it is hardly surprising these days to see older people living well into their 80s and beyond.

But the residents of an idyllic Greek island seem a little different than the rest of us. The residents of Ikaria are two and a half times more likely to reach the age of 90 than Americans and live about a decade longer than the rest of Europe.
